Pittsburgh Police are handing out free gun locks to the public in an effort to prevent accidental shootings. The move comes after a child was found with a gunshot wound to the head Monday.

Pittsburgh Police hope a new firearms tracking unit and help from the public can reverse an increase in gun violence. According to investigators, a gun was used in 93% of the homicide cases in 2021. The new unit will investigate illegal firearms purchases and track the flow of guns in the city. Police were joined by the families of victims of gun violence at a press conference Thursday to implore the public to help prevent community members from committing acts of violence.
